Innovative project
In this project I am asking college students with disabilities to use the Livescribe Smartpen in at least one of their classes for at least 30 days. At the end of that time I will ask the students if they see the pen as an effective tool, not just in class, but also in their future careers. I have initial feedback from 3 students that have already used the pen or are just starting to use it. Two are very excited about the Smartpen the other seemed to be a bit intimidated by it and I’m concerned that she will not use it in class. I’m beginning to reach out to other students with disabilities that use the Smartpen on other campuses so I can have more feedback. Getting enough students to get accurate feedback was one of my initial concerns due to the fact that I only have 3 pens to loan out.
Contemporary project
In this project I’m trying out some new materials I have to assist students with low GPA’s in becoming better advocates for themselves, getting more organized, improving their study skills and time management. Again my main concern here is getting students to come in to meet with me. I invited 16 students in that finished fall semester with a GPA below 2.0. So far 3 of them have come in and I have just learned that 5 of them did not return for spring semester, so my numbers are low. From past experience I know that mid-term seems to be the time many college students realize they need help. As we get closer to that date I expect several more students to come in for assistance.
As a backup plan for this project, I have begun asking students, administrators and faculty that come in to my office about apps or other technology that they use to stay organized, assist with time management or that they use as study tools. I’m keeping notes on this. My original plan included exploring these tools with the students as I met with them, so I feel this information will be helpful to all my students in the future as well as for this project.
